Discord Moderation Setup: A Practical Safety Checklist

Set up Discord moderation with clear roles, tested permissions, AutoMod alerts and a reporting process. Includes checks for new members, bots and staff access.

Moderation works better when the server is configured before an incident. A written rule cannot stop someone from viewing a channel they should not see, and a bot cannot replace a staff decision about context. This checklist combines permissions, automated tools and human reporting into a setup you can test.

Treat it as a starting review, not a certificate that your server is secure. Revisit the checks after changing roles, installing an app or reorganising channels.

Give roles only the permissions they need

List what each role actually does: host an event, remove disruptive messages, handle reports or administer the server. Grant the permissions required for that job rather than giving everyone Administrator for convenience.

Discord's roles and permissions guide explains role hierarchy and channel permissions. Review both: a role name is not an access policy, and a channel override can change what someone can do.

Use the available role-view tools and a permitted non-staff test account to inspect private channels. A staff account may bypass the restriction you are trying to verify. Check that removed moderators no longer retain access through another role.

Review bot and app access

Install apps from a trustworthy source and read the requested permissions. Ask what each permission enables and whether it matches the advertised feature. A scheduling app should not receive broad administration simply because its installer recommends an easy setup.

Keep an inventory of installed apps, the responsible owner and their purpose. Remove unused integrations and review permissions when an app's function changes. Never paste account tokens into tools or give a stranger server ownership to repair a bot.

Browse Discord bot listings for discovery, then independently check the publisher, documentation and permission request. A directory description is not a security audit of the app.

Configure AutoMod and inspect its alerts

Discord AutoMod supports automated filtering and actions. Configure rules around actual problems and send alerts to a staff channel someone monitors. Automated tools can make mistakes; test ordinary messages as well as messages you expect to block.

Review exemptions carefully. Discord documents that users with Administrator or Manage Server are exempt from AutoMod rules, so testing only as an administrator is misleading. Check ordinary-member behaviour before relying on the filter.

Do not assume a blocked message resolves the underlying incident. Repeated harassment, evasion or a threat may still require a staff response and platform reporting.

Make reporting private and reachable

Explain where members can report a concern, what information helps and when someone is likely to respond. Keep reports access-limited. Avoid asking people to publish sensitive evidence in general chat.

Staff should know who handles urgent incidents, how to preserve only necessary evidence and when to escalate. Use factual action reasons and an appeal path. The server rules guide provides examples of understandable policies and fair enforcement.

Run this test after changes

  1. A newcomer can read the rules and find help.
  2. A normal member cannot see staff reports or private moderation records.
  3. A restricted role cannot regain access through another role or channel override.
  4. A test message exercises the intended AutoMod rule and reaches the right alert channel.
  5. Event hosts and bots can do their jobs without unrelated powers.
  6. A former staff member has lost staff access.

Record the result and the date, then fix failed checks before increasing promotion. Clear permissions and reachable moderation help a server deliver the experience described in its welcome flow, instead of asking newcomers to trust a promise the configuration does not support.
