About Roleplay Discord servers

Roleplay servers are collaborative storytelling spaces where members write as characters in a shared world. Some run original settings with their own maps, histories and factions; others are set in established fandoms. Most use text channels as scenes or locations, character sheets that must be approved before play, lore channels that explain the world, and out-of-character (OOC) channels where players coordinate plots and chat as themselves. Discord's threads and forum channels have made long-running scenes much easier to manage.

Before joining, read a server's rules and lore carefully. Good roleplay servers specify their writing expectations (one-liners, semi-literate or literate), content ratings and how they handle violence and mature themes, and they explain how character approval works. Look for active game masters or staff who run events and plots, clear rules against godmodding and powerplaying, and a separation between in-character conflict and out-of-character behaviour. A healthy OOC culture is often the best predictor of whether a roleplay community is fun to be part of.

DiscoListing reviewers check every roleplay listing for accuracy and safety. Servers must describe their content rating honestly; any server with sexual roleplay must be marked NSFW, age-gated per Discord's rules and kept out of default search, and sexual roleplay involving minors, or characters presented as minors, is banned outright with no exceptions. We also reject servers where staff pressure members into private roleplay with adults, or where "roleplay" is used to harass real people.

If you are new to roleplay, start in a server with a beginner-friendly writing requirement and an active OOC channel. Ask staff which scenes are open to new characters, and do not be shy about asking for help with your first character sheet.

Related tags include RP, Fantasy RP, Sci-Fi RP, Literate RP and Worldbuilding for more specific communities.
