Using your Discord components

Export the message body for your bot’s message API. Buttons with custom IDs and select menus need an interaction handler in your bot. V2 replaces ordinary content and embeds with display components. For webhooks, add with_components=true to the request URL; ordinary incoming webhooks support non-interactive components, such as link buttons. Use an application-owned webhook or bot for interactive buttons and selects. Image previews load directly in your browser.

How to use the Discord components generator

  1. Choose classic components (buttons and select menus in action rows) or a Components V2 layout with text, images, sections and containers.
  2. Add and arrange the pieces. The preview shows the message the way Discord draws it.
  3. Copy or download the JSON and send it from your bot. A Components V2 message needs the IS_COMPONENTS_V2 message flag set.

Common questions

What is Components V2 on Discord?
It is the newer way to build a message entirely out of components: text displays, sections, media galleries, separators and containers, alongside buttons and select menus. A message using it cannot also have content or embeds.
How many buttons can a Discord message have?
A classic message holds up to five action rows, and a row holds up to five buttons, so 25 buttons. A select menu takes a whole row to itself.
Do buttons work without a bot?
Link buttons open a web address and need nothing behind them. Every other button and every select menu sends an interaction that an application has to answer.
